ABB supplies dedicated transformers for the world's largest power wind turbines
ABB Transformers ABB, the world's leading power and automation technology group, will equip 40 wind turbines for offshore wind farms in Ireland. These wind turbines, produced by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Vestas Offshore Wind Power Co., have a single installed capacity of 8 megawatts and are the world's most powerful wind turbines.
These special transformers will be used in the Volney offshore wind farm expansion project, located approximately 19 kilometers west of the island of Volney near the Cumbrian coast in the UK. In addition to transformers, ABB will also supply high-voltage cable systems to deliver electricity from the Volney expansion project to the UK. At the end of 2014, ABB also provided 32 special transformers for similar wind turbines in the expansion of the BurboBank offshore wind farm in the Irish Sea.
After the expansion, the power generation capacity of the Volney offshore wind farm will increase by 660 MW based on the current 367 MW, providing clean electricity to more than 800,000 British homes.
ABB's 34 kV transformer with a capacity of 9.7 MVA and the accompanying low voltage product will be installed in the wind turbine tower. In a marine environment, the quality and reliability of the product is critical. The custom-designed ABB wind power transformers use state-of-the-art materials and components to meet the most demanding electrical and mechanical requirements and to fully adapt to the offshore working environment. At the same time, these transformers are also anti-vibration, short-circuit proof, compact structure, etc., and their weight is 30% lighter than similar standard transformers.
Fang Qin, president of ABB Group's grid business department, said: "These special transformers can meet the specific application requirements of the most powerful wind turbines. It is ABB's display of technological innovation and helping customers create value. We are very happy to promote more renewable. Energy integration, which is one of the key areas of ABB Group's 'new phase' strategy."
ABB offers a full range of reliable, durable and efficient power transformers and distribution transformers. As one of the world's leading transformer manufacturers, ABB supplies both liquid-filled and dry-type transformers and provides service support for parts replacement throughout the life of the transformer.
ABB is a global leader in power and automation technology, helping customers in the power, industrial, transportation and infrastructure sectors improve their performance while reducing their environmental impact.
