Once China's power generation equipment manufacturers strive to sell more power generation equipment to various countries' markets, it is bound to break the pattern of sharing market share among multinational enterprises and developing country enterprises, thus aggravating the fierce competition in the world power generation equipment market.

Hydropower equipment market is developing rapidly

In recent years, the research and development capabilities of new products with independent intellectual property rights in China's hydropower equipment industry have increased significantly.

With the successful development of the 700,000-kilowatt large-scale hydropower unit of the Three Gorges Project, the localization of major hydropower equipment in China has achieved initial results.

After the reform and opening up, China's hydropower entered a period of rapid development. Starting from the Lubuge Hydropower Station, China's hydropower construction began to innovate in the system, and the owner system, bidding system, and supervision system introduced hydropower development. A group of hydropower stations have emerged from this, and Guangcai, Yantan, Manwan, Geheyan and Shuikou are also called the new “five golden flowers”. After the 1990s, China's hydropower development ushered in a small Yangchun, Wuqiangxi, Lijiaxia, Tianhuangping pumped storage power station started construction and put into operation.

Entering the new century, China's hydropower has entered a period of accelerated development. In 2004, with the commissioning of No. 1 unit of Gongboxia, China's hydropower installed capacity exceeded 100 million kilowatts, surpassing the United States to become the world's largest hydropower country. On July 4, 2012, the Three Gorges Hydropower Station, the world's largest hydropower project across the century, was completed. In 2013, a large number of giant hydropower units, such as Xiluodu, Xiangjiaba, Xiaowan and Laxiwa, were put into operation. At present, China is not only the world's largest hydropower installed country, but also the country with the largest scale and fastest development in the world.

In fact, the domestic five major power generation groups and leading hydropower equipment suppliers started the hydropower “enclosure boom” as early as 2008. At that time, in the face of an annual increase of 20 million kilowatts of hydropower “cakes”, all equipment manufacturers The scale of production has been expanded to varying degrees. After a large number of tenders in 2008, the industry entered a four-year recession period. Among them, the “12th Five-Year Plan” large and medium-sized hydropower development basins such as Jinsha River, Dadu River, Minjiang River, Yalong River and Nujiang River have almost no bidding for hydropower units. This caused the bleak domestic equipment orders of equipment companies in 2012. With the increasing number of entrants, orders have decreased, and the industry has experienced overcapacity, equipment companies have begun to expand overseas.

The technical level has been internationally leading

Like most developing countries, China's hydropower equipment manufacturing industry adopted the strategy of “market-for-technology” in the early stage of development. Through the introduction of technology and cooperative manufacturing, it has introduced a large number of equipment and advanced foreign experience. In recent years, through the development of independent technology, conventional hydropower is basically at a level comparable to foreign first-class hydropower companies and can compete on the same stage.

"Since the 1980s, on the basis of earnestly implementing the national hydropower development plan and absorbing foreign advanced technology, the technical level of design, manufacture, installation and operation of hydropower equipment in China has made significant progress and achieved a great leap.

In terms of equipment selection, parameter design and mechanical and electrical arrangement of hubs, China has a Three Gorges mixed flow unit with a capacity of 840,000 kVA, a thrust bearing load of 5,500 tons and a rotor diameter of 10.6 meters. The maximum head is 189.2 meters and the single unit capacity is the largest. These performance systems reflect the manufacturing capabilities and design levels of hydropower units in China.

China is becoming a factory in the world. However, in the process of globalization of manufacturing, “Made in China” will face severe challenges.
